About

This is the personal blog of Mike Daugherty.  It’s been here since I graduated from MIT in 2007, even though there’s not much content to show for it…

After MIT, I worked from September 2007-January 2010 as first a Software Engineer, then as a Senior Software Engineer at Vistaprint in Lexington, MA.

In January of 2010, I decided that I’d spent enough time in Boston and moved to Beijing, China.  It may sound crazy, but I knew how to speak Mandarin, and my girlfriend was already living there, so it wasn’t as bad as it sounds.

Now that I’m in Beijing, I’ve started an online company, Bespoke Row, to make the tailored clothing experience that is so convenient here available to everyone in the US.  The goal is to make it easy for everyone to find clothes that fit both their sense of style and their body so they look great.

I’m also trying to help build the startup community in Beijing in general.  That’s a big order, so my specific contribution is creating a convenient coworking location where entrepreneurs and independent workers can work together to get things done and share their expertise.  I hope that having a consistent location where people can always go and know they’ll be welcomed will provide a hub for the community of people who work on their own in Beijing.

    Hey Mike,

I found you while doing a quick search for startup info in Beijing. I am also in Beijing doing tech stuff. Haven’t really checked out the scene too much yet, but it would be good to meet at some point.

    Where do you hang out?

    Nick

      Hey Nick,

Thanks for the comment. I checked out your blog as well; I like the entry on how to learn a language by learning to translate because it reminds me of exactly what I did in the beginning.

I live near Gongti, I’m usually around that area (Sanlitun, Guomao, etc.). What about you?

Hey there I’m also a entrepreneur in Beijing who moved here from the US – I studied in CMU, worked at Microsoft and moved to Beijing in 2006. Let me know if you’re interested to meetup one of these days!

    • Mike Says:

Hey Tak – that would be great! Where are you located? I live near Gongti, so I spend most of my time in the Dongsishitiao, Sanlitun, and Dongzhimen area.

      • Tak Says:

Meeting at/around the Dongzhimen area sounds good. Lunch friday or this weekend works for me. Let’s figure this out over email (you should already have my email address, I don’t have yours), also send me your phone number!

    • Mike Says:

Hey Tak – I just sent you an email.

Hi Mike, I ran across your blog while doing some research on the tech industry in beijing – thanks for sharing your thoughts! I work in the tech industry in Beijing as well (recently relocated from the states) and found your work at Bespoke Row to be interesting. If you’re still around and open to meeting, would love to connect. Thanks.

    • Mike Says:

      Hey DJ,

Thanks for checking out my blog. I’m still in Beijing and definitely open to meeting up. I closed Bespoke Row, however, so right now I’m a little more at the periphery of the startup world in Beijing. I’ll send you an email.

Are you still in Beijing? I was thinking of starting a co-working space here also. I am in tech, particularly creating health content. Please get back to me if you are still in Beijing and have time for a coffee or lunch.
